There’s this golden rule out there: “Treat others as you would like to be treated.”

I’ve decided this rule is stupid.

I mean, think about it. Let’s say I had a really bad day. All I want to do is go home, watch some Family Guy (or Arrested Development or planet earth) and go to bed.

You realize I’ve had a bad day, and when you have a bad day, you like to talk about it. So you bother me with stupid questions and interrupt my show.

Or maybe when you have a bad day you like to like to do yoga. So you make me do yoga and I hurt myself because I’m not flexible at all.

Or maybe when you have a bad day you like to eat tomatoes. So you shove tomatoes down my throat and I die because I’m allergic.

All because you treated me how you would want to be treated.

Here’s a much better version of this rule: “Treat others as they would like to be treated.”

And you know the best way to find out how I want to be treated?

Ask me.

And you know the best way to make sure others know how you want to be treated when they ask you?

Tell them the truth.

Life really isn’t that complicated.

That is all.
